ABOUT JIMBARAN
Until a few years ago, Jimbaran was a tranquil fishing
village on the bay south of the airport. The beach is a continuation
of Kuta beach and it is still rather quiet and peaceful compared
to its famous neighbour. The water is shallow and has no sharp corals.
The 2 km wide white sand beach is one of the most beautiful spots
to watch a sunset over the bay.
Fishing boats moor here and fresh fish can be bought
for a reasonable price. Recently, nomerous open-air restaurant have
set up shop here, offering delicious fresh grilled seafood. Visitor
from other parts of the southern Bali flock nightly to this new
attraction.
Jimbaran village is unique in that the borders two
separate coasts lying less than 2 km apart, each of wich has a markedly
different geography. To the west is broad expase of Jimbaran Bay
and the Indian Ocean, and the bay's end, the Mimpi Resort Jimbaran
Is located. To the east a tidal mudflat enclosing the shallow and
sheltered Benoa Harbour.
South of Jimbaran, teh road climbs steeply up to
the bukit (hill), offering dramatic panoramas back up the beach
to the rice land and teh volcanoes on a clear day.
All around the sourthern and western edges of the
plateau, limestone cliff tower above a pounding surf 70 meters (250
ft) below. This is where Bali's best surfing is found - Padang Padang
and many other well-know spots.
The Bukit's most famous landmark is Pura Luhur Uluwatu,
an exquisite monument situated on a headland at the westernmost
tip of teh peninsula. The carvings whichdecorate the temple are
very well preserved in comparison to many of Bali's other temples,
due to the extremely hard, dark gray coral stone used in its construction.
